Cook 5: January 26, 2009

On the menu:

  • Grilled Chicken Breasts (Teriyaki Glazed, Spicy Sweet, and BBQ Glazed)
  • Brown Rice
  • Broccoli
  • Grilled Bananas ala She Who Must Be Obeyed

Creativity was on the menu tonight…  I wanted to make something simple with guaranteed leftovers and use up some of the foodstuffs that had been hanging around the kitchen too long.  Chicken breasts were an easy choice since they were in the front of the freezer and wouldn’t take very long to prep and cook.  We were out of cooked brown rice, so that was also an easy call, and the broccoli was destined for the compost heap if it didn’t get cooked in the next night or so.

Since I wanted leftover breasts, I figured I might as well get some variety.  So I pulled out some leftover BBQ sauce from New Years Eve, some bottled teriyaki sauce, and some leftover rib rub (also from New Years Eve).  Seemed like a good combination of flavors to me, although I eventually decided they probably should be kept on separate breasts.

Then I spotted the bananas.  The bananas with the large brown spots.  You know, the kind that no one really wants to eat.   I looked at the rib rub, looked at the bananas, and then came to my senses.  She Who Must Be Obeyed probably had something to do with that, as She decided that the garlic in the rib rub probably wouldn’t go well with bananas, grilled, steamed, or otherwise.  However, She did have an old family recipe that did turn out really well.

To make a long story short, rib rub is not just for ribs anymore.  The chicken breasts with the rib rub were to die for; once we tasted those no one really wanted to eat the other flavors (the BBQ sauced ribs came in second, and we will never use the teriyaki sauce by itself as a glaze again).  The highlight of the meal was the bananas though; She Who Must Be Obeyed (and not referred to as the acronym SWMBO) really came up with a winner on this one.

As I said yesterday, nothing says BBQ like snow in January.  It was clear today, although there is still a fair amount of snow on the ground and it didn’t warm up much here.  Another perfect day to fire up the grill…
