Just Burgers

The spousal unit went to the freezer with me this afternoon to pick out something for dinner. I haven’t visited the meat warehouse recently, and the freezer is getting a bit low on things to throw on the grill (but is surprisingly full of ice cream; how do these things happen?). Sitting front and center was an opened package of frozen burger patties from who knows how long ago (probably Independence Day, but I really don’t want to think about it too much). So frozen burgers it was for dinner.

During the cook, I was thinking about this post and how uninspired and basic tonights meal was. On the grill was a bunch of frozen burgers, some quickie beans (kidney and black beans with BBQ sauce, mustard, brown sugar, molasses, Worcestershire sauce, and some rib rub), and whole apples in foil with butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon.

I put together a double burger with cheddar cheese, pickles, onions, tomato, mayo, mustard, and ketchup for myself, took a couple of bites, and suddenly realized that maybe this wasn’t so plain after all and maybe I should have taken a picture. Then I tasted the beans and knew I farked up by not having a picture of the plate. This meal was actually darn tasty in spite of being so simple.

The apples were a fitting end to the meal. They weren’t all that different from the way I normally make them, but again, should have taken a picture. If it wasn’t for this one, I wouldn’t have proof of any of this.

Just goes to show you that even the simple meals can be special, even those that start out as just burgers…
