Life is short, so eat dessert first

Or if you don’t do that, at least post about it first. In this case I’m attempting to kill two birds with one stone, as I am at least a day late in posting an apple dish that I promised as part of an Outdoor Cooking Guild project. Hopefully this will make up for the lateness, even if the main article doesn’t get updated with a link back to this post.

Tonight’s dessert was an Apple Crumble cooked on Bubba Ho-Keg. Well, actually, two of them.

This was good enough that I will cook it again and actually write down the exact measurements so that it can be posted in the Recipes section. For now, I will say that the topping consisted of brown sugar, rolled oats, butter, flour, and cinnamon. The apples were Fujis, cored and sliced but not peeled. They were mixed with a bit of butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and a hearty dose of rum. The apple mixture went in two large pie pans (thanks Marie C.), were covered with the topping mix, and put on the BKCG for about 35 minutes at 400°F. I rotated them on the grills (top went to the bottom, bottom went to the top) about halfway through the cook to even out any temperature differences.

They turned out very well, and not only is something that I would cook again but also serve to company. Heck, I might even sign up for dessert at the next pot luck we go to and take these. We served them over vanilla ice cream, but they were good plain and I would imagine they would go well with whipped cream, or even some plain cream.

Now that I’ve posted about dessert, I can take my time posting about the actual meal itself. Maybe after it digests a bit…
