It’s on: the 2010 MOINK Ball Challenge

by zydecopaws on July 19, 2010

My buddy Larry over at The BBQ Grail is running a challenge to prove that MOINK isn’t just an appetizer anymore. I don’t think he was completely inspired by a post I did awhile back, but in talking to him I did find out that this sort of activity contributed towards his idea for the contest.

Unlike my previous attempt to show that MOINK can be a main course all by itself, the purpose of this challenge is to cook MOINK in the traditional fashion, then incorporate them into another main dish. There are some other rules as well such as not publishing your result before a certain date, submitting the correct number of photos in a certain format, a story about the dish, and your first-born child (ok, I made that last one up), so if you are interested get yourself over to the contest page and check it out.

Even if you don’t join, you’ll want to check back later as I’ve seen some potential entries in the past that have me scratching my head and wondering how I will top them. And if any of you have any suggestions of what you’d like to see attempted, feel free to leave them in the comments.

That sounds like a great contest! I’d like to see a beef meatball about this size: http://bit.ly/SZmOo wrapped in bacon and baked into a puff pastry. Break out the 1500 gallon drum smoker!

Wow, think of the size of the bacon weave you’d need to wrap that monster. I can guarantee I won’t be trying that anytime soon…

Good luck to you!

I will be entering the Bubba Keg/Big Steel keg rib throwdown set for the first week in August.

Good luck with that. I have to admit you sent me scrambling to a couple of different forums to figure out if I wanted in on it or not; I think I’ll pass on that one as the rules feel too much like competition rules without the benefit of the taste section. Hard to be creative with that one…

Yeah, its just picture picking and done by overall poll. I mean, how can you really pick? Its for fun anyhow and I would doubt mine will look all that great but I like to participate. Sorry you had to look, I should have told you the main manufacturer site. I might do something crazy to stand out, you never know….

I would be really tempted to do something outrageous even if it meant getting DQ’ed, if for no other reason than to have some fun with it. However, even though I don’t post there often I don’t want to get banned as there are a lot of great posts there with modification ideas and new recipe ideas.

Swedish MOINK! Balls?
MOINK! Balls and BBQ Spaghetti?
How about a brandy rich glaze ignited flambe style and poured on top of a MOINKabob and goat cheese?

I can’t wait to see what comes out of this contest. I don’t have MOINK! certification but looking forward to the results.

Those are some great ideas! I don’t recall seeing anything in the rules about having to be IMBAS certified to enter; I’m thinking you could come up with something real creative and get certified as part of the contest. Kill two birds with one stone. As long as it isn’t a pizza stone…

“MOINK! Balls and BBQ Spaghetti?”

Oh my, that could be huge!

I’ve seen this done before, and would be very surprised if at least one person doesn’t submit an entry for it in the contest.

The pictures I saw were pretty impressive looking. That’s why I said it wouldn’t surprise me to see it again as an entry. Who knows, I might even give that one a try…
