On the menu:
  • Smoked Turkey Breast
  • Baked potatoes
  • Broccoli

When the DJs on the radio say that it is a perfect day to BBQ, who am I to argue?    Rooting around in the freezer turned up a turkey breast from a sale long past.  It was time to do something with it, and since I hadn’t gotten around to putting the smoker away after the Superbowl butts I figured I might as well put it to use again tonight.  So I snuck outside at lunch, fired up the smoker, and away we went.

The turkey turned out pretty good.  I spiced it up with the traditional offerings; sage, thyme, ground pepper, and a bit of garlic salt.  About an hour into the cook, I cracked open a beer (Fat Tyre Amber Ale, because it happened to be available) and poured half of it over the breast.  It took a bit longer to cook than I originally intended as I kept the heat down to about 275°F for most of the cook.  When the turkey was done, I let it rest for about 20 minutes and made some gravy from the drippings in the pan and the packet that came with the turkey.  Talk about an unexpected pleasure on a non-holiday Wednesday…

The potatoes were an afterthought; they went on about the same time as the beer basting.  Nothing special was done with them at all.  I didn’t even bother to wrap them in foil.  They had to be put in the microwave to finish off; next time I will wrap them in foil and stick them down in the coals.
