Cook 1: January 4, 2009

Today we grilled on the 22″ Weber Kettle and served five people with healthy appetites.  This particular meal is a favorite around here, and both the Teriyaki Strips and Trashbag potatoes are consistently requested by guests and for social gatherings where I am called upon to provide BBQ.  It’s likely you’ll see these show up again in future postings…

The entire meal was cooked on the grill and took about an 2 hours from the lighting of the charcoal to table.  Extra time was needed due to the amount of meat cooked (double recipe), the outside temperature, and the amount of direct cooking space available while trying to keep the potatoes warm on the grill.

About 15 minutes of additional prep time was necessary earlier in the day so that the Teriyaki Strips would be properly marinated; I managed to fit that in during halftime of the Baltimore-Miami playoff game.  The weather was cold all day, but although there was snow on the ground (leftover from one of the worst snowstorms in 40 years) nothing too wet was leaking from the sky during the cook.  It was snowing when I first fired up the coals, but had mostly let up by the time the cooking began.  Overall not a bad start for the year, especially since I am not counting the ribs I smoked on New Years Eve for the party we attended…

img_0097One last note on the dinner: we uncorked a bottle of Clay Hill 2006 Pinot Noir from de Ponte Cellars (located in the Willamette Valley Oregon wine country).  Good stuff; I don’t normally do the wine snob thing, but I highly recommend this vintage if you can get your hands on it.  According to the maker:

This light bodied wine shows nice aromas of fresh cherry with toasty notes of oak. It’s soft and well integrated tannins invite it to be a wine for any occasion.

I don’t know about any occasion, but it sure was tasty on this one…

An added bonus for today was the severe weather warning:

… Possibly some light snow as Pacific storm moves in late today…

That must be what was dripping all over me during the cook.  Remember, No Excuses… 😉
