Back to… whatever

The kids went back to school this morning, and it’s time for me to get back to posting regularly. The last couple of weeks have been pretty busy and I’ve been more than a bit remiss in keeping up with this blog.

A little over a week ago I was in the Bay Area to assist a Auntie in relocating her worldly possessions to a storage facility a couple of miles from our home. She’s moving up closer to us, and will be a bit of a nomad for the next few months, so it fell on my shoulders (and back) to load up the truck and move to Beverly, er, Battle Ground. A rocking chair made the trip, but it wasn’t on the top of the truck and no granny was in sight.

If you’re still reading this, you’re probably wondering what this has to do with BBQ. And I’ll tell you. I was able to convince Auntie to take me to the best BBQ restaurant in the Bay Area (at least in my opinion), Phat Matt’s BBQ in Oakland.

They’ve upped the ante (no pun intended) since I was last there and have a four-item combo on the menu now. Pardon the poor picture, but I dug in before remembering to snap a photo. What can I say, I was hungry…

Pig candy was also on the menu, as was chocolate-covered bacon. I was gracious and let Auntie have all but one piece of each; she wasn’t so kind and texted me as she finished them off during the week to remind me of what I was missing. Maybe I will get lucky and she’ll have time to go by and get some more before she leaves to come up here…

Following a morning of loading the truck and a fifteen-hour drive north (arriving home at 5:00 in the morning) and another day of unloading truck into storage, I relaxed for a day or two then took off for the lake. As a reminder of why they call it Labor Day weekend, I spent most of time staining decks, mowing lawns, and taking care of other deferred maintenance (trimming bushes, washing machine repair, etc.). I did manage to cook a couple of meals while there, but used the excuse of a broken keyboard to not post anything while there. First up was a tri-tip rubbed in a blackened Cajun spice mix and reverse-seared on Bubba Ho-Keg.

As you can tell by the pictures, the DSLR didn’t make the trip, and the sun was out and very bright. As for the meat, it was very juicy, very tasty, and went well with the sides. Even if the picture isn’t that great…

I’ve lost track of what night we had that; I think it was Friday, but I can’t be sure. I do know that later in the weekend I sliced a pork loin thin and grilled the chops after marinating them in a white wine-soy sauce-pineapple mix. Did I mention the sun was out all weekend at the lake?

The reason I carved these up so thin was so they could be used on the last of the on-sale onion buns. With leftover cabbage slaw and a nice dijon mustard.

One of these days I’m going to learn how to focus the iPhone camera on the main course rather than the pickle accompaniment. But not today, as the kids are back in school, I have Booster and other business to attend to, and a dog that once again has contracted coonhound paralysis.

I guess this means that we are back to normal around here. Whatever that is…
