They said it tasted good…

But I wouldn’t have known if they hadn’t told me. When you have a cold and can’t smell or taste your food, you have to cook on instinct. Youngest Daughter turned 16 while the Red-headed Boy and I were off doing the Dizzy World thing, so for the past week I’ve had to listen to power-whining about not getting her birthday dinner. So tonight she picked the menu, and I cooked it without tasting during the process.

In spite of all the other things she could have chosen, stir fry was it for this year. This was a simple beef with broccoli. The beef was thinly sliced tri-tip marinated in soy sauce, rice wine, fresh ginger, and garlic. The veggies were broccoli (duh), onion, water chestnut, and mushrooms. The finessing sauce was Red Boat Fish Sauce, white wine, soy sauce, hoisin sauce, and brown sugar. A teaspoon of corn starch mixed with water was added at the end to thicken the sauce.

No complaints were registered at the table, and other than hot and filling I’ll have to take the family’s word that it actually tasted good. You know your head is stuffed up when you can’t even taste the broccoli…
